Course Overview:


Dental Nurse (integrated) Level 3 involves working with dental professionals in a clinical environment to provide chair-side support and maintain high standards of cleanliness and infection control. They prepare materials, sterilise instruments, keep records, carry out stock control and ensure patient comfort and safety. Dental nurses interact with patients of all ages, other members of the dental team, and representatives of organisations providing support services. They work within the standards and scope of practice defined by the General Dental Council Scope of Practice.

Entry Requirements:

  • Apprentices without a level 2 qualification in English and maths must achieve this level before taking the End-Point Assessment.
  • For apprentices with an education, health, and care plan or a legacy statement, the minimum English and maths requirement is Entry Level 3.
  • For apprentices whose primary language is British Sign Language (BSL), a BSL qualification can be used as an alternative to the English qualification.

  • Understanding and adhering to GDC Scope of Practice, Standards for Dental Team and legislation
  • Applying evidence-based principles for learning, clinical practice and decision-making
  • Practising duty of care for population healthcare, including safeguarding and consent
  • Raising concerns in line with GDC guidance and local policies.
  • Knowledge of dental and regional anatomy, respiratory and circulatory system
  • Maintaining confidentiality, gaining patient consent, and accurate patient records
  • Operating equipment, instruments, and materials for chairside support.
  • Managing risks and infection control through scientific principles and local protocols
  • Managing medical emergencies and applying First Aid principles in the workplace
  • Maintaining professional knowledge, competence, and network while demonstrating ethical and accountable behaviour

The following is a list of summarised contents (but not limited to) that a DENTAL NURSE must be able to do upon completion of this programme:

  • Adhering to legal and ethical responsibilities as per the General Dental Council, including complying with best practice guidelines
  • Taking responsibility for the integrity of own actions and completed work, recognizing limits of competence and experience
  • Providing chair side support during dental procedures, monitoring, supporting, and reassuring patients throughout their treatment in a patient-centred way
  • Effectively managing time and resources, selecting and preparing equipment, materials, and instruments, and carrying out maintenance and testing of equipment in line with local policies and procedures
  • Communicating appropriately, effectively, and sensitively with patients through all media, respecting their dignity and choices, and ensuring patient confidentiality
  • Checking for valid consent for all treatments and personal care delivery and making effective decisions regarding the safety of patients when taking a radiograph.
  • Working safely and efficiently in the clinical environment, managing and performing effective decontamination and infection control procedures, and handling, storing, and disposing of materials in line with manufacturers’ recommendations
  • Creating and updating accurate and current patient records, including social, medical, and dental history, and archiving them securely and in line with legislation
  • Delivering appropriate and current evidence-based oral and general health advice, recognizing and supporting action to deal with medical emergencies, and responding to emergencies competently by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Participating in ongoing appraisal and review processes, continuously developing professional skills, improving quality, and collaborating as part of the team
